A very Baba New Year

"Gong Hei Fatt Choy"
First of all, Happy Chinese New Year to all my readers! May the Year of the Rabbit bring abundance and prosperity to you and your family!

I'm flying back to Malaysia for CNY in one more day's time... can't contain the eagerness and excitement to see my beloved family and friends again! Flipping through our wedding pictures, I don't know why but I feel that this series really captures the whole Gong Xi Fa Cai - peranakan feel of celebrating CNY... hehehe so I decided to post them up here to share with you all! ^^

"All that gilded glory"

This series is part of my pre-wedding photoshoot from France Taipei back in December 2009. Wow, it feels like an eternity ago now. This is Peranakan House in Penang. I can only remember the sweltering afternoon heat as we stepped out from the France Taipei 4WD after it parked in front of the House. We had only one hour to take all our pictures and go, else we had to pay extra. With the heat and nervousness of that moment combined, I don't remember taking in fully the sights and beauty of that place. But when I looked at the above picture, one phrase came to mind - "All that gilded glory". The intricate, gilded gold designs of the House and the memories it held throughout the years made us look so small... totally consumed by its beauty.

"One hand on the bakul sia"
This picture somehow reminds me of my grandma. I think I look like her here.
Some of the pictures were developed and given to us in black & white. I wanted to get the original colored copies, but France Taipei made it so difficult for us... our wedding planner said she had to write a letter to the photographer to ask him to change it to colored, then had to seek his consent, and it would take some times to re-develop, then had to pay extra... so troublesome... but we were in a rush to get the album and get our wedding going on so I didn't manage to get my colored copies in the end.

Leo's friend commented in Facebook that this looks like Wong Fei-Hung...
I feel it looks like Datuk & Datin instead... hahah.

And this is one of my favorites. Haha, I think this is the photographer's personal favorite too because he had been so impatient with the both of us all day and when I just leaned back against the pole and struck this pose he was like... "OH GOD... FINALLY!" and asked me to hold this pose and snapped this shot. I look so different here... really couldn't recognize myself. What do you guys think? Do I look anything like this, sometimes, in real life, anytime at all???

And I love this as well... so sultry and sexy... like he's whispering some secret in my ear but I'm sure at that time he was complaining... "So hot... damn... my baju is sticking to me and I'm starting to smell..." :-P

Written under the shade of trees

Jang Jae-In - Written under the shade of trees

She is the Top 3 finalist of Superstar-K, a singing competition ala American Idol. This is my favorite song at the moment, with the lyrics about autumn and lost love. I like this song very much because of her voice, which is very jazzy and special. Please enjoy.

Lyrics:

The fragrance of lilac flowers
I will not forget
Dazzling sunshine, my arms full of sorrow
Expectations on the bus window

Written under the shade of trees
Your face seems to fade
The chilly rain falls today
The clear morning and cold wind

This beautiful world
I will never forget about my love
Oh, these trees
Under the fragrant shade

Oh, beautiful world
I will never forget about my love
Oh, these trees are the stars
The fragrance under the sky

Written under the shade of trees
Your face seems to fade
The chilly rain falls today
The clear morning and cold wind

This beautiful world
I will never forget about my love
Oh, these trees
Under the fragrant shade

Oh, beautiful world

The fragrance under the sky

You know I love you

God is so Good!

Praise the Lord!

Two things happened yesterday and today that made me very happy and touched me to the core.

Firstly, I tasted the fruit of success for my research project! Managed to complete building and testing my whole system prototype yesterday, and transmission was successful! Actually my feeling was 50%-50%; theoretically I thought it should work, but on the other hand there's so many uncertainties in analog circuit especially when I'm an amateur circuit builder but I tested it and it worked! Well... at first it didn't work but after I told myself not to panic and work with a calm head (working in the lab when everyone had gone to dinner is the best time for me), and after debugging some problems I got it to work...! Just in time before I go back to Malaysia for my holidays... I successfully completed my personal milestone on this project and I'm really thankful to God for all his help. And of course not forgetting all the advice and help I got from my hubby on hardware and software... he's really the most intelligent being I have ever met on Earth!

And today I'm very happy... just now I went to the dormitory office to hand in my curfew letter of excuse for my return from Malaysia on 13 Feb. (Yes my dormitory has a curfew until 2a.m. and I felt like a small child while typing out my letter yesterday and giving it to professor to sign.) And I wanted to talk to the guy manager about moving out my stuff to another building for storage but in the end... he made everything so easy for me!!!!!!!! Previously the lady staff told me I need to move out all my belongings to the old dormitory building... which was so troublesome... I have so much stuff and I needed to get my Korean friend to help me... but now the Manager said I can just leave my things (all boxed up) on my original room verandah! He just wanted make it easy for me cos I'm all alone and I would be returning very late... and he will leave my new room keys at the security guardpost so I can get them and move in that night itself!!!!!!!

Praise the Lord! Through him, he makes all great things possible. And He really loves me... previously he gave me all these challenges but in the end takes them all away... really really thankful and happy now ^^

And I'm also very grateful and thankful for my hubby for sticking with me through thick and thin... thank you so much for supporting me and making everything possible for me. Can't wait to see you soon in 4 more days!~

Bye bye Summer Place

The apartment that we bought monthssss before we got married is now finally completed and O.C. approved. Too bad, we won't be staying in it after all. According to him, we'll be staying in a much better place instead. :-)

But I will really miss it. It was our first home purchase, our bright, shiny, new place. The irony of it is, I never really took part in the paperwork, nor planned for the renovations, nor even got to step foot in this place before it got sold.  Also there goes my fantasy of lounging by the poolside cabana sipping a cocktail in my sexy bikini while looking at him do laps in the infinity-edge pool or run on the treadmill opposite in the glass-windowed gym room.

But wherever he chooses to live, I will follow him cos he's my dear sweet hubby. Because he supports and still loves me after all that we've been through. And most importantly, I truly believe in his great taste to choose the perfect cozy warm nest for us and our little babies to live in!~

Poolside cabana
The morning view that we were supposed to wake up to every day
I'm gonna miss this the most

Last Autumn

Nov 20, 2010

At the end of autumn, I decided to go hiking after learning in Korean language class that there is a popular activity for each of the four seasons. During autumn, Koreans like to go for 단풍놀이 (dan pum nol i) or 'maple leaf excursion'/ 'autumn hiking'. For spring, it's 놀이 'flower excursion', for summer it's 바닷가 'going to the beach' and for winter it's 스키 'skiing'.

Decided to go to Mt Geumjeong for hiking after seeing Shirly's FB photos but later realized that my friend and I'd taken the wrong trail up!~ No wonder we reached the fortress North gate instead of South gate... and didn't see the swan lake... =.=''' But going via the Beomeosa temple (North gate) route takes shorter time to reach the top (2km, 1.5 hours up and down) while Shirly's Children Grand Park (South gate) route took her 4-5 hours up and down. Looking back it seemed the right choice because I had only a short afternoon to spare and I didn't want to be stuck on the mountain after dark.

Anyway, seems hard to believe that autumn was only 2 months ago. It feels like it's forever winter here, both physically and mentally. But looking on the bright side, it's already 2 months into winter and everything is going to end soon!~

When the trees are bathed in golden yellow colors of the afternoon sun
Small stream
Maple leaves (단풍) against the autumn sky
Unknown flowers
Almost bare
Red maple leaf (단풍)
Actually because it was already the end of autumn, there weren't a lot of colorful foliage left to be seen. But it's OK, I'd already seen my fill with my darling during our in Seoul~

Stone steps
Stone bridge across a small stream
No more stone steps, only huge rocks
I think Bukit Jambul is easier to hike because of all the man-made steps up. At Mt. Geumjeong trail there were only stone steps up for like a quarter of the way and then there were only huge rocks all the way up and many leaves on the ground. Walking on the leaves was kinda dangerous because if you were not careful you'd slip and fall. Going down was even tougher because of the darkening sky. Haha thanks to my many 'trainings' at Bukit Jambul, hiking up Mt. Geumjeong was easier than I thought... even my friend was amazed at my stamina and pace! :P I should have done this more often...

Further up the mountain the trees got barer and barer and it felt like almost winter with all the branches sticking out. Then we reached a part where there were many silver grass (lalang) and I knew we were almost reaching the top!

Geumjeongsan Fortress (North gate)
Designated National Monument No. 215
The North Gate of Geumjeongsanseong Fortress is located about 1.6km west of Beomeosa Temple. It is the most rugged-looking of the four gateways to the fortress. Unlike the other three, this does not have an arched top; it is also the smallest (means the one most 'cincai'-lah). An inscription on the Memorial Monument for the Construction of Geumjeongsanseong Fortress reads: "The work on the castle tower was started in early spring 1808 and completed after 149 days of work, under the leadership of Mayor O Han-Won. Thousands of workers were mobilized, columns and beams were brought from as far as 50km away, and rocks were brought from mountainous areas."

Sat there and watched as the sun went down
There was a group of school children at the top too, maybe they were gonna camp there overnight...

In the evening as we hiked down and reached Beomeosa Temple
Then we went to eat 'nak ji bok um' (octopus fried rice) in Dongrae which was very very veryyyy delicious~~

#Funny Konglish (Korean English) joke here#

And as we were eating our 'nak ji bok um', my Korean friend, who is a guy btw, suddenly asked me out of the blue, "Do you like anal?"

I almost spurted out the three octopus tentacles I was chewing on into his face.

Turns out he meant to ask whether I liked to eat pig intestines... hahahahahahahahha... that was really an OMG moment... but still I couldn't pinpoint which part of the question was wrong until yesterday I 'discussed' this with Leo... he should have replaced the 'anal' with 'anus'...

Ahhhhhhhhhhh~ LOL

 Tandoori chicken
Garlic naan

 Lamb Vindaloo & Basmati Rice

5 things I hate about winter

1) Waking up in the morning and start to put on layers and layers of clothing that makes me look as fat as a dumpling before going out. Nowadays I don't even care to check the weather forecast, I just put on everything that looks warm. And God forbid I forget my winter scarf, gloves and beanie! Then I will feel extra cold...

2) Getting my butt down on the icy cold toilet seat, and to add to the misery... washing my hands with ice cold water afterwards... Why is my lab building (one of the oldest in PKNU) toilet not equipped with bidet and toilet seat warmer? Sometimes I find myself walking to the next building block just to use the warm toilet. But recently, (stupid as I may sound) I just realized that there is another alternative to the solution! Just use the damn squat toilet! *Slaps forehead*

3) Dry skin in places where I least expect. I mean, usually I just slather lotion on my arms and legs but now I have to make sure I slather lotion on my boobs, underbelly... yikes, you get the picture.

4) Feeling so cold all the time that I just don' feel like going out, or walking back to the dorm for my meals, or going out for some shopping. So damn cold!!! Besides, the scenery outside is so bleak until there's nothing to look at! Even in the lab I feel cold where my skin is not covered. So I bought these cute hand warmers which covers my hand up to my fingers so that I can still type on the keyboard. Just feel like drinking hot coffee all the time and hibernate in my room. So funny the Koreans also have a term for hibernating (겨울잠 kyo ul cham or 'winter sleep')... haha.

5) Cold outdoors and hot/stuffy indoors. Sometimes I get a migraine from this whenever I come indoors to the dorm room, lab or bus/subway. And throughout the night when I sleep my throat gets so dry that I need to wake up and down a liter of H2O. And not to mention my phlegm that can never go away. Yucks.

OK that's the end. Can't wait to go back to Malaysia this end of the month and be greeted with warm, sunny weather and feel the warmth of my family and good, real friends! And tandoori chicken and teh tarik and nasi lemak and chicken rice and fried noodles and my mom's soup and of course not forgetting all the CNY food...!!!

P/S: One last thing on my mind.

Black Swan

Natalie Portman is the Black Swan

One of the best movies of 2010... I liked it so much, I watched it twice!

A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN features Natalie Portman as Nina, the newly picked prima ballerina for Swan Lake who has to dance the role of both the White Swan and the Black Swan. Nina is a perfect fit for the White Swan, while her newcomer competitor Lily (Mila Kunis), although not technically perfect, has a passion and personality that matches the Black Swan. When the two compete for the part of the Swan Queen, Nina finds a dark side to herself.

Basically about the ballet dancer

Very nice!!! Must watch!!!

새해 First Sunrise of the New Year

OK, trying to start on my NY resolution to blog more... ^^

Today I went to see the first sunrise of the year (Korean custom)!

5.30am - Woke up, put on 4 layers of clothes (cotton long john, Uniqlo heat tech turtle neck, Uniqlo flannel turtle neck, purple flannel hoodie) and my winter jacket.
6.15am - Left the dorm and met up with my friend to walk to Gwangan Bridge, which is just 15 mins away from my dorm!
6.35am - Met up with another friend and started to ascend the bridge. The Gwangan Bridge is only open for pedestrians 2 times a year - NY event and the marathon.
6.50am - Reached the midspan of the bridge and started to wait for the sunrise.
7.20am - "Why no sunrise yet??? Are the clouds/fog blocking the sun to come out?"
7.32am - Finally, the golden red ball of fire emerging from the horizon. The first sunrise of the year!
7.40am - Got interviewed by Busan 90.5FM radio station... hahaha
8.00am - Ate McDonalds Sausage McMuffin
8.30am - Back in my comfy dorm room... continue zzz...

Happy New Year 2011 everyone!

Mercy and I on the bridge. She is from Tanzania and we have been attending Korean language class together for two semesters now. Her Korean is better than mine, I think!

Last moon of 2010

Nice ship at the horizon, before sunrise

The sun is coming out!!!

First sunrise of the New Year on Gwangan Bridge

All three of us foreigners were interviewed by Busan 90.5FM... hahaha... just a short clip of us saying our NY wishes ^^

Also, my first time using HOT PACK - shake shake shake and put the hot pack inside my pocket to keep me warm... ^^
